The Candle Report
Gifting Issue 2026
Ten of the UK’s best-known candle brands and our own, compared on price, size, burn time and the one thing nobody puts on a spec sheet. Because a candle gift is never just a candle.
Published by Burn That Karma. Comparison built from publicly listed UK product information, checked October 2026. Prices and specifications are set by each brand and change over time. All other brand names belong to their respective owners.
01, The brief
Scented candles are a go-to gift in the UK, and one of the least interrogated. You pick a jar, you read a price, you hope the person likes fig. Nobody tells you how many hours you are actually buying, or how much you are paying per hundred grams, or whether the thing on the label means anything at all.
So we did the boring part. We took ten of the best-known candle brands in the UK, from supermarket aisle staples to the department store names that anchor every Christmas gift guide, and we put our own next to them. Same table, same columns, no hiding.
Then we added the column the gift guides never print: what the candle says when someone unwraps it. Because when you are choosing a break up gift, a birthday gift, or a Christmas gift for a woman who already owns three vanilla candles, the meaning is doing most of the work.
02, How we compared
Every brand in this report is judged on the same five measures, taken from what each brand publishes about its own signature product.
The typical UK listed price for the brand’s signature single format.
Net weight in grams, as printed on the product. The number that quietly decides everything else.
Hours of fragrance, as stated by the brand. How long the gift actually lasts.
The honest value metric. Strips away jar design, ribbon and reputation.
The percentage of fragrance in the formula. Almost nobody publishes it. We do.
A candle brand that tells you its fragrance percentage is a brand that expects you to ask.
03, The comparison
Filter by what you actually care about, sort any column, and flip the whole table between cold specs and what each one says about you. Burn That Karma is highlighted so you can see exactly where we sit, including where we do not win.

Figures are the publicly listed UK price and specification for each brand’s signature format at the time of checking. Street prices vary by retailer and season. Fragrance load is shown only where the brand publishes it. The lowest price per 100g among the rows shown is highlighted.
04, The value test
Big jars and multi-wick tins will always win on raw grams, so comparing them to perfume led candles is not a fair fight. This chart keeps to one size class, the 140g to 210g single-wick candles people buy to give, and shows what each one costs per hundred grams of product.
Listed UK price divided by net weight. 140g to 210g single-wick candles in this report only.
Healing Era
Main Character Energy
210g, up to 40 hours, £21.99
05, The gift matcher
Every candle is a good gift. Not every candle is the right gift for this particular moment. Pick what you are actually shopping for.
Burn That Karma
Narcissist Recovery
A break up gift has one job: prove you were paying attention. A neutral floral candle says I panicked in a shop. A candle called Narcissist Recovery says I watched what he did to you and I am not going to make you explain it again. 210g, up to 40 hours, £21.99, which is the right amount to spend on a friend without making the moment heavier than it already is.
Also good: NEOM Organics if she is more exhausted than angry, or Red Flag Alert if she is still in the seeing it clearly stage.
Burn his ego here06, The verdict
Here is the honest read of the table, category by category. We are not the answer to every question on this page, and a report that claimed otherwise would not be worth reading.
Best for hours
Nothing in this report gets close to a 538g jar for burn time per pound. If the brief is maximum hours for minimum spend, this is the answer and it is not close.
Best for packaging
The cream box and black ribbon do half the emotional work before the lid comes off. A formal gift that never needs explaining.
Best design object
The oval label is a shelf statement in its own right. Bought as much for how it looks unlit as for how it smells lit.
Best for wellbeing
Built entirely around essential oil blends and a de-stress promise. If the gift is meant to say slow down, this says it fluently.
Best value in its size class
210g at £21.99 works out at £10.47 per 100g, 41% less than the next cheapest 140g to 210g single-wick candle in this report (The White Company), with a disclosed 7 to 8% fragrance load.
Best for saying something
Narcissist Recovery. Red Flag Alert. Main Character Energy. Peace Is The New Drama. Four names that do what a card usually has to.
07, Full disclosure
Burn That Karma is a small independent British brand, founded in 2025 and registered in London. We sell four scented candles, 210g each, £21.99 each, in two collections built around the two halves of recovery: Drama Detox for the naming, Healing Era for the building.
Our fragrances are composed for us by an established British fragrance house, at a 7 to 8% load depending on the scent, with IFRA documentation on file for every formula. We publish that number because the rest of the category does not, and because the person spending £21.99 on a gift deserves to know what is inside it.
What we are not: we are not a hundred year old house, we do not have a flagship on Regent Street, and we are not going to win a burn time contest against a 538g jar. What we have is a fragrance house behind the scent, the lowest price per 100g of any 140g to 210g single-wick candle in this report, and four names that say the quiet part out loud.
Most candles are bought to make a room smell nice. Ours are bought to mark the week someone finally stopped explaining themselves.
Drama Detox
Red Flag Alert
210g, up to 40 hours, £21.99
08, Questions people actually ask
It depends entirely on what you want the gift to say. For a formal or professional gift, Jo Malone London and The White Company carry instant recognition. For a design led gift, Diptyque. For a personal gift to a woman going through something, a candle named for the moment she is in will land harder than any luxury jar, which is why Burn That Karma exists at £21.99.
The rule for a break up gift is simple: acknowledge it, do not decorate it. A generic floral candle says I did not know what to get you. Something named for the experience, like Narcissist Recovery or Red Flag Alert, says I saw what happened and I am on your side. Pair it with a handwritten note and you are done.
Under £25 the market splits in two. Large jars such as Rituals and WoodWick give you more hours for your money. Perfume led candles give you a gift that reads as considered rather than functional. Burn That Karma sits at £21.99 for 210g, which works out at £10.47 per 100g, 41% less than the next cheapest 140g to 210g single-wick candle in this report (The White Company).
Burn time scales with size and wicks. In this report, 140g to 210g single-wick candles state 28 to 60 hours. Large single-wick jars last far longer: Yankee Candle states 110 to 150 hours for its 538g jar. Multi-wick candles burn faster for their weight. Burn for two to four hours at a time and trim the wick before each use to get the full stated time.
Fragrance load is the percentage of fragrance oil in the finished formula. It is one of the factors behind how strongly a candle scents a room. Most brands never publish it. Burn That Karma candles are made at 7 to 8% depending on the scent, composed by an established British fragrance house and documented to IFRA standards.
Sometimes. A £63 candle is buying you a fragrance house, a design object and a name the recipient recognises, and for some occasions that is exactly the right purchase. What it is not buying you is proportionally more hours. Run the price per 100g before you decide, which is precisely why that column is in the table above.
The one you would be slightly embarrassed to explain. Self gifting is the only category where the name on the jar is for an audience of one, so pick the one that describes the version of yourself you are currently building. Main Character Energy was designed for exactly that purchase.
